The theory of use is easy, swing and hit. In reality it takes a lot of practice to get reliable control of where the whip will hit, and how hard. Check out the Bullwhip FAQ for expert tips and safety considerations.
Bull-whips are dangerous and very hard to use. The longer ones even more so. When a whip cracks the tip has just broken the sound barrier, which means it's going over 700 miles an hour. That can do a lot of damage to soft skin. If you want a picture of what damage a whip can do look at Denzel Wahington's back in the movie Glory.
If you want to do whip play, start with a smaller whip, perhaps 3-4' long, and work your way up to the 20' version which takes an awful lot of space. Few things inspire more terror than a corretly used whip, and few things will make a sub run faster than an incorretly used one.
$10 (for the short cheap ones) to over $400 for the high quality long ones
Purrrr! Purrrr! Purrrr! Purrrr! (4 of 9)
I still have a lot of learning to go myself on these, and am right now still working with a 4' one, when I remember to. It's fun to use, and makes me want to get a longer one and a fedora. :)
