There are many different styles available that all attach differently and cause a different effect on the clamped nipple, some, such as the japanese clover clamp are usually rated as severe devices.
Nipple clamps usually restrict the blood flow in the nipple, so watch carefully for skin dicoloration or temperature change. They should not be left on tightly for more than 15 minutes at a time. As Morn will attest they often hurt the most at the moment they are taken off.
