Here are some published materials which I've read dealing with BDSM. These are in no way to be considered comprehensive reviews.
Non-fiction
The Loving Dominant by John Warren
This is a pretty good look at the variety of mindsets within the BDSM community. There is a multitude of
advice on subjects from finding a submissive to introducing your vanilla partner to BDSM as either a dom or a sub.
The Lesbian S/M Safety Manual edited by Pat Califa
This is a very good treatment of safety practices for many kinds of BDSM play. Areas covered include
psychology, bondage, hygene, medical history, body fluid play and some
general first aid. There is also a wonderful section about the nine
degrees of submission that I wish I could reprint electronically for
you. This book is not just for lesbians.
Fiction
Story of O translated by Pauline Reage
This is perhaps the most well known looks at a submissive, her life, training, and adventures. Very little is known of the origins of this book and the author. I personally have several problems with both the writing, and how 'O' is handled through the book, but there are undeniably several hot scenes in it. There has been at least one movie made based on this book.
Exit to Eden by Anne Rice writing as Anne Rampling
This is another very well known book. This one deals with a mistress and her relationship with one of the slaves brought to the pleasure island which she runs. The focus is more on the relationship between them than on the island and society on it. This book is a fairly soft look at the relationships within the BDSM world. There has been a movie made based on this book, and it is worth watching, but it is far from true to the book.
The Marketplace by Laura Antoniou writing as Sara Adamson
This is a much less well known book and much better than those listed above. This book focuses on the mid-level training of four already experienced submissives and getting them ready for sale within the fictional Marketplace. There is actual growth of the main characters in response to the training they receive, and a look back at their past and how each of them got involved in being slaves. Attention is also paid to the owners and trainers. This is the best BDSM novel I have read, though if all you're after is some kinky sex scenes you should choose another book to read.
The Slave by Laura Antoniou writing as Sara Adamson
This book is the sequel to The Marketplace. Where The Marketplace looks at the basic training of four slaves withing a training house, this book looks at the training, and subsequent life of an individual slave. The Markteplace world is expanded and explained in more detail, making the glimpses more tangible. The role and expectations of a slave are much more fully explored, as are the slaves reactions to her treatment. In intensity and quality The Slave picks up right where The Marketplace left off.
The Trainer by Laura Antoniou writing as Sara Adamson
This is the last book in the Markteplace trilogy. It is a very full look at the difference between what makes a trainer, and what makes a good/great trainer. The Markteplace world is expanded even more, and the role of the trainer is explained. If you've ever been looking for ideas on how to train your slave (or would be slave) this book has several ideas. Again there is sex in the book, but I found an absense of hot sex, however the D/s elements are wonderful and more than make up for it.
Ok, so where do I get them?
Good question. You can get these and
many other BDSM books through StormCat's
BDSM Bookstore
